No such thing as waste – this is ART

What's that saying? – one person's junk is another one's treasure or next artwork! Tuesday night saw the launch of the Waste 2 Art Exhibition currently on show at Orange City Library (come in through the front door and turn left). The winner of the Community Functional section was artist Amy Clare with My Whimsical Chair(pictured) it uses an old bedroom chair (remember the ones with the fluffy seats) other materials include steel offcuts and re-used office paper. And check out the yellow wearable plastic dress by Kinross Wolaroi Year 8 Technology Group. Winner of the High School Secondary – Functional section was the students with The Sleeping Bag Quilt made completely from recycled plastic bags (pictured top right under the photo frames). The Easter Holiday Workshop Group created works of art as Photo Frames using recycled materials buttons, ribbons, shells and fabric. They were highly commended for their efforts. Winner in the Primary section 3 Dimensional was Jack Maclean with Water Waiter. It is an ingenious floating waiter to be used in the swimming pool – bring on summer for that one. The exhibition also includes the work Fragility by Tom Buckland. It is a family of 3 delicate seahorses constructed from found objects and junk. Closer inspection will reveal lego pieces, pen lid and a shoelace – clever really. So come on down, check them out and be inspired to make use of stuff you may have lying around.

A NetWaste initiative and proudly sponsored by SIMS Metal, WASTE 2 ART is a community exhibition and competition that shows creative works made from reused and recycled waste materials. The purpose of the project is to encourage the concept of REDUCE REUSE and RECYCLE whilst changing attitudes about rubbish and what waste we all create on a daily basis. A good idea I'd say.
