A group of 30 people heard from author Robert Wainwright on Tuesday night about the incredible life and times of George Ingle Finch who was born in Orange. Finch became a scientist who pioneered the use of oxygen tanks in mountaineering. He was a key member of the British team attempting to climb Mt Everest in 1922. Wainwright’s book is titled Maverick Mountaineer because Finch was seen as a wild colonial boy from Australia who had no business being in the British alpine establishment. Finch gained inspiration for mountain climbing when he saw the view from Mt Canobolas as a boy. The launch was supported by Boomers Bookshop.
