UK Visitor with Connections to Wellwood

Trudi Mayfield with Graeme Kerr and Blaize Kerr and portrait of Andrew Kerr senior

We were pleased to host a visit by Graeme Kerr from the UK with his daughter Blaize taking time out to view the Wellwood Collection at Orange City Library. He is pictured with Librarian Trudi and a portrait of Orange pioneer Andrew Kerr senior.

Scottish born Andrew Kerr senior was one of Orange’s early pastroralists.  He came to Australia in 1825. Shortly afterwards he purchased a property at Yullundry in the Molong district. He bought “Wellwood” at auction by outbidding William Charles Wentworth. He paid 8/- per acre, for 1195 acres in December 1836.

His homestead Wellwood still stands and is visible from the Mitchell Highway, part way between Orange and Lucknow.

Graeme, who grew up at Wellwood, travelled from England to present his children with a family tree and thoroughly enjoyed his time talking about the family and finding out interesting things he did not know in the collection.
