First Power Pole for Orange

This week marks the 100th anniversary of the first power pole being erected in Orange on the corner of Anson and Byng Streets. This happened on 8 January 1923. The 45 foot (13.7m) pole came from Telegraph Point, near Port Macquarie and Mayor Arthur Colvin at the time helped lift the pole into place. To find out more about this event check out our display at Orange City Library featuring an early map of Orange, timeline, photographs, manual, light switches, objects and the Commemorative Key presented to Mayoress Edith Colvin on 8 September 1923 when she turned on the Orange electrical supply.  This is something to tell the grandchildren about. Imagine life in Orange before electricity. What did we do for lighting before then? The display objects are on loan courtesy of Essential Energy Depot, Orange – thank you.
