Surveyor General Presents Map & Launches Online Exhibition

A large group of surveyors travelling in the footsteps of explorer/surveyor Major Thomas Mitchell were on hand at Orange City Library yesterday afternoon to see Mr Warwick Watkins AM, Chief Executive, Registrar General, Surveyor General launch a new online exhibition and present Orange with a replica map by Mitchell. Deputy Mayor Cr Jeff Whitton accepted the gift on behalf of the community. The exhibition highlights eleven Crown Plans that form the Australia Felix expedition and can be seen online at www.baseline.nsw.gov.au. The website is the heritage portal and online exhibition space for the Land and Property Management Authority. Mr Watkins talked about Mitchell's achievements and his talents for surveying, exploring, invention, plan-making, cartography and drawing. The event also coincided with the commemoration of Major Thomas Mitchell's 175th Anniversary of the Australia Felix expedition. Thank you to everyone for coming along and to the Surveyor' General's team for showing us all the website. You can visit the website at www.baseline.nsw.gov.au.
