Spring into School Holidays

Children can enjoy a range of activities through Central West Libraries this Spring.

We are showcasing some of the best Australian literature for children and young adults these holidays, as we prepare for the Children’s Book Council of Australia Book Week in October.  If you are a Curious Creature with a Wild Mind, you can be part of fun activities and exciting competitions that ask you to explore and respond to the wonderful CBCA 2020 shortlisted titles.

Central West Libraries “Pick the Winner” competition invites Curious Creatures to investigate the CBCA shortlisted titles and make their choices for Book of the Year across all six categories.  Prizes will be awarded to the entrants whose choices most closely match those chosen by the CBCA judges on October 16.

Enter our “LEGO and CRAFT Book Cover Competition” which challenges children to choose a CBCA shortlisted title and recreate its cover in LEGO or CRAFT!  Email us a photo of your creation to be in the running for some great prizes.

Explore the short-listed titles in Orange City Library’s reading nook, or online through the CBCA website.

Sign up via Eventbrite for a Central West Libraries School Holiday Activity Pack, which will contain which will contain some fun colouring-in and upcycling paper craft.

In addition to our competitions and activities, as always we have a wonderful library filled with books, CDs, DVDs, and magazines just ready to be borrowed for the holidays!

And finally, for those who come into Orange City Library challenge yourself to solve the biggest Eye Spy we have ever made!

ALIA HCL Anderson Award to Jan Richards

Jan Richards with the HCL Anderson Award

The Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) has presented the prestigious HCL Anderson Award to Jan Richards AM FALIA (CP) in recognition of her outstanding service to the industry, domestically and internationally.

In addition to her role as Manager, Central West Libraries, NSW, she is also Chair of the ALIA Public Libraries Advisory Committee; former Chair of the IFLA Standing Committee on Public Libraries; and a member of the Library Council of New South Wales. Jan Richards was to be presented the award at ALIA National 2020 Conference but due to COVID-19 this event was cancelled.

The HCL Anderson Award is the Association’s highest honour that can be bestowed on an Associate Member of ALIA. The award commemorates HCL Anderson, principal librarian of the Free Public Library of New South Wales, 1893–1906. Anderson created a collection and service policy to give his infant colonial library a stature of national importance.

Congratulations to Jan on this incredible achievement.
